WHO? 公共解体株式会社 - PUBLIC x UNTITLED 01

Japanese artist ‘Untitled 01’ presents a conceptual exploration of solitude and destruction through his new film ‘WHO?’ in collaboration with PUBLIC.

Living and training in Okinawa, an island off the coast of Japan, Untitled 01 has been left completely isolated from the global parkour community since the pandemic began. Meanwhile, nearly 1,000 miles away, the capital city of Tokyo has been home to a series of controversial competitions that have attracted attention to a new competitive style of parkour in Japan.

The medium of a parkour video presents an opportunity for expression - a dimension of parkour missed in current formats of competition. ‘WHO?’ takes the unique visual style developed by Untitled 01 to new heights. The aesthetics created by the use of fisheye, vhs and low-light produce a feeling from a different era - a time before iPhones, GoPros and social media. This nostalgic effect is compounded by the music and lo-fi graphics, also all produced by Untitled 01.

Through this work, the boundaries of what parkour can be are pushed right up to the edge of dance and performance. The rhythm and energy of movement matched to the distortion of the lens. The red chair visible throughout the first section of the film is progressively destroyed as it is used as an obstacle for movement.

This 7min short film is an ambitious attempt to use parkour as a form of artistic expression.

  • Extremely inspiring, shows how pk (culture) isn’t just about the movement of the body itself but is linked to our surroundings in multiple dimensions. Lots of these pk-set ups esp. for competitions are lacking thatt
